I always set the verse as A and the chorus as B.ĭrums are really the foundation. Tracks are different sections, A and B, you can record. A two-track loop station (they go up to five) like the RC-30, which'll cost you $300, is good for beginners. You need a speaker, a mic, and a loop station, a machine that records sounds, which you can vary in pitch and tempo and play back through an assortment of effects. But by the end of the week I had my timing down. If one thing is off, everything is off, and you're left with a big pile of noise. That's the most important part of looping.
I went into the garage to learn how to use it, and I sucked. My first looper was a tiny two-track called the Boss RC-30. I wanted to do something different, so I learned to loop. I moved to Los Angeles to be a singer–songwriter, but I was like every other female musician with an acoustic guitar. I started writing music soon after, and eventually I picked up guitar. I always joke that, as an Asian kid raised by Asian parents, it was either violin or piano, and piano was less boring to me. My grandpa even had a nickname for me as a kid: lekio.
